Spoonflower isn’t just a platform for makers - it’s a launchpad for discovery, visibility, and growth in the surface pattern industry. As a professional surface pattern designer, I create designs with the end user and commercial application in mind - whether that’s textiles, homeware, or stationery. But recently, I’ve added something new to my creative portfolio: a curated Spoonflower shop.

For those who aren’t familiar, Spoonflower is an online platform where artists and designers can upload patterns that customers can order on fabric, wallpaper, and home décor products. It’s popular with quilters, interior lovers, and small businesses. But it's also a platform that many creative directors and buyers quietly use to scout emerging talent and explore what’s trending in real time.

Spoonflower as Strategy: Why I Joined and What It Means for Surface Pattern Designers

Beyond the Portfolio: Bridging Visibility and Commercial Potential

Spoonflower gives me a space to showcase my surface pattern designs directly to both consumers and industry professionals. It’s not quite a portfolio site or a licensing hub – it sits somewhere in between. Accessible, searchable, and product-focused, it allows designs to be viewed in real-world contexts, which is key for visibility and buyer confidence.

Real-World Insights, Licensing Leads, and Creative Growth

I’ve spoken to and heard from art directors who actively browse Spoonflower to discover fresh, commercial design talent. They’re looking for patterns that work across applications – from cushions and curtains to fashion and wallpaper – and want to see how those designs perform in the marketplace before reaching out for licensing.

"If you’re a surface pattern designer, visibility matters—and platforms like Spoonflower can be a smart part of your strategy."

What You'll Find in My Spoonflower Shop

The designs I’ve uploaded to Spoonflower reflect the same high standards I bring to all my licensed and commissioned work. Every pattern is thoughtfully created with commercial applications in mind—whether that’s for soft furnishings, fashion textiles, or stationery products. I don’t treat Spoonflower as a side project or hobby outlet; I treat it as an extension of my professional design practice.

From the initial concept to seamless repeat construction, each design is crafted using industry-standard tools like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop. I ensure every pattern is technically sound, scale-considered, and colour-balanced—so it looks just as good on a swatch as it does on a finished product.

What You’ll Find in My Spoonflower Collection

  • Seamless repeat patterns designed for effortless printing across a range of materials

  • Trend-aware designs that align with current and future colour and style directions

  • Commercially viable colour palettes tailored to interiors, fashion, and lifestyle markets

  • A curated aesthetic that complements high-street and boutique design needs alike.

Spoonflower for Professionals: Insights, Exposure, and Real-World Impact

Why It’s Not “Just for Hobbyists”

There’s a common misconception that Spoonflower is only for crafters. Yes, it’s loved by small businesses and DIY makers but that’s exactly why it’s a great place for trend visibility and consumer insight. You can quickly spot which patterns resonate, what colourways perform well, and how your designs look in context. It’s also a place to test ideas, get feedback, and build a following outside of traditional B2B design routes.

For Buyers, Brands, and Collaborators

If you're a buyer, art director or product developer:

Browsing Spoonflower offers a shortcut to discovering new designers with a distinct style and ready-to-license artwork. You’ll find professional creators who understand both aesthetic and technical demands - designers like me, who bring strategy, commercial thinking, and executional quality to every pattern.
